Bordeaux blend wine is very popular among wine lovers, it is also a benchmark of good quality wine, so that’s why so many wineries around the world try to produce high quality Bordeaux blend wines to prove to the world that they can also make wine that is as good as Bordeaux. I attended Moet Hennessy wine tasting event recently and met with Mr. Jean-Guillaume Prats, Moet Hennessy’s President & CEO of Estate and Wine in person. I learnt a great quote from him about wine - “People don’t drink the wine, they drink the story!” I couldn’t agree more! Aoyun wine is the first wine project of Moet Hennessy in China. It’s the highest vineyard in the world with 2300m above sea level in Adong mountain. They handpicked all grapes from the organic vineyards. According to Aoyun’s winemaker Maxence Dulou, the climate of Himalayas is very similar to Bordeaux, so they can produce wine that is similar to Bordeaux. This wine is made of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. It’s elegant and silky with vanilla, herbaceous, black plums and toasty notes. It’s really an outstanding wine from China. If you blind taste it, you may have guessed that it’s a Grand Cru classification from Bordeaux. The first vintage of 2013 only produced 24000 bottles, this interesting story can surely attract you to own a bottle or try it out. Another winery that surprises my perception towards Chinese wine technology is Silver Heights Winery. I attended the vertical tasting of Silver Heights Winery lately with the winery owner and winemaker Ms. Emma Gao. We tasted 7 wines, including vertical tasting of 5 vintages of The Summit (Bordeaux blend, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 & 2015 vintages). If you blind taste these wines, you’d guess that they are Bordeaux Grand Cru classe wines as well. Among the 5 vintages, I like 2011 most, it’s elegant with dried roses, with higher acidity than 2010, and it has black pepper and lively fruity notes. The story of Silver Heights is very inspiring and I also admire Emma’s courage and hardworking a lot. Her dad encouraged her to study oenology and she went to Bordeaux to study it in 1999, without knowing much about wine making and French, she is really amazing in getting the certified oenologist from Bordeaux. She has also met her husband, Thierry Courtade, the winemaker from Chateau Calon Ségur, and his family has been winemakers for 3 generations. Emma brought her winemaking skills and romance back to China and produced many award- winning wines. Don’t you want to try her wines with this inspiring and romantic story? 早前出席 Moet Hennessy 的葡萄酒品酒會, 跟其葡萄酒部主席 Jean-Guillaume Prats 會 面,席間他引用了一句話來形容葡萄酒,他說: 「People don’t drink the wine, they drink the story !」
